How Cyber Security For Small Business Can Be Enhanced?

Cybersecurity for small business is the most talked about subject these days because it is a small business that is more vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Small businesses have more loopholes in their security system than large corporations.

Hence they are mostly targeted by hackers. In a survey, it was seen that one-third of all the attacks were targeted on small businesses.

Cybersecurity is all about protecting information and computer-based equipment from unauthorized access and destruction of data.

It is something that is very common in today’s world and the scale of the threat is only increasing with time.

From Government websites to websites of multi-billion dollar businesses like Facebook and New York Times have been hacked in the past.

Types of Cyber Attack

1. Direct attack:

Here your internal system is targeted and it is tarnished through the software installed by the attackers.

The most business performs their financial transactions online and the attackers target financial information more than anything else.

2. Indirect attack:

Here the company’s reputation is targeted. The attackers create fake emails and website accounts to misdirect the customers and steal their personal information. These kinds of attacks are very difficult to track.

What should be your first step?

As soon as you detect a threat you must report the incident to the cyber crime cell of your state or district.

Your technical team will be able to identify the system that has been attacked.

In case it is just one or two systems then tell your technician to disconnect it from the network so that the other systems remain safe.

If your entire website is being attacked then you must notify all your associates and customers so that they do not proceed with any transaction.

How to stay protected from Cyber Attack

1. Use Strong Password and Authentication

This is one of the most basic things that you ignore unknowingly. Most of you might create a password that is easy to remember but that’s something you must avoid.

Something that is easy to remember is really easy to hack.

Hence, experts suggest giving a password that has at least twelve characters with numerical.

If a website does not allow twelve characters then use a mixture of upper and lower case characters.

When it comes to cybersecurity for small business, multi-factor authentication can make a big difference.

It requires additional authentication apart from the password to gain entry into a particular piece of information.

2. Install Firewall

It is a software just like antivirus that controls and analyzes the data packet as well as the incoming and outgoing of network traffic, to determine whether they should be allowed or not.

It is something that you get along with the operating system; all you have to do is install it.

If you are not convinced by the firewall of your operating system then you can buy them too.

3. Antivirus

It is an integral part of cybersecurity for small business, or for the matter of fact any business.

It should be installed immediately after installing your operating system.

They are not only used to detect and destroy viruses but they are really good at protecting your system from getting hacked.

If any malicious software is detected you receive a warning notification.

To make it more effective to run a scan after installing a new software or hardware.

However, make sure not to install a cracked version of important software’s as most antiviruses consider them to be a threat.

4. Back up

Unless you are using the fake version of an operating system backing up your data should not be a problem.

Every operating system offers an automatic backup facility, all you have to do is set things properly and your data will be backed up automatically.

Do make it a regular practice as in case of a cyber attack all your important documents will remain safe with you.

5. Log off

A system is more vulnerable when it is logged in, so you must log off your system even when you are going away for a few minutes.

If the attackers get hold of your system and you are logged in then they will get access to all the private information, which will make the already bad situation worse.

6. Limit Access

Not every employee or official needs access to every password or for the matter of fact system.

So, do not send out the password to everyone as that can increase the security risk.

Make sure not let anyone install any new software or hardware without your permission.

Conclusion

Cybersecurity for small business starts and ends with employees because they are the assets of the company.

Do give basic cybersecurity training to your employees, so that they are aware of the possible threats and can notify the authorities when the attack happens.

At the end,

No one is completely safe from cybercrime only precaution and awareness can reduce the impact.
